Khutba for Eid al-Fitr 2024

Part 1

Allah says in His Generous Book:

You who believe, have taqwa of Allah with the taqwa due to Him and do not die except as Muslims.

This Eid has fallen at a time in which the worldwide Muslim community is in a state of shock, grief and anger due to the ongoing events in Palestine, not to mention other various injustices being committed against our fellow Muslims across the world. Thus, although we are entirely grateful to Allah for permitting us to live through, and take benefit from, yet another Ramadan, the joy we feel – which is usually a prominent feature of Eid al-Fitr – has been to some extent curtailed by sadness and outrage.

Yet, there is a great danger in becoming caught up in the negativity that such events inevitably produce and in becoming distracted by it.

We must never forget that, while it is true that we must oppose oppression and injustice wherever it manifests, it is also true that it is Allah who is the Actor in all that happens.

Allah says in Surat al-Mulk:

Blessed be He who has the Kingdom in His Hand! He has power over all things.

He who created death and life to test which of you is best in action. He is the Almighty, the Ever-Forgiving.

He who created the seven heavens in layers. You will not find any flaw in the creation of the All-Merciful. Look again – do you see any gaps?

According to the mufassirun, ‘flaw’ here means incongruity, disorder, and disproportion. So, there is a perfection inherent in the creation, and Allah’s creation goes beyond physical phenomena such as plants, animals, planets etc, since He subhanahu wa ta'la also creates every aspect of what happens and the things we experience.

It is through the creation that Allah tests us, and being tested is an inherent part of being honoured with the gift of Iman. Allah says at the outset of Surat al-Ankabut:

Alif Lam Mim.

Do people imagine that they will be left to say, ‘We have iman,’ and will not be tested?

We tested those before them so that Allah would know the truthful and would know the liars.

Or do those who do bad actions imagine they can outstrip Us? How bad their judgement is!

As for those who look forward to meeting Allah, Allah’s appointed time is certainly coming. He is the All- Hearing, the All-Knowing.

When being tested, it is appropriate to turn to Allah and be patient. Allah says in Surat al-Baqara:

You who have iman! seek help in steadfastness and salat. Allah is with the steadfast.

Do not say that those who are killed in the Way of Allah are dead. On the contrary, they are alive but you are not aware of it.

We will test you with a certain amount of fear and hunger and loss of wealth and life and fruits. But give good news to the steadfast:

Those who, when disaster strikes them, say, ‘We belong to Allah and to Him we will return.’

Those are the people who will have blessings and mercy from their Lord; they are the ones who are guided.

So this life is a test and how we do in this test will lead to our ultimate destination; the believer will be in the garden by Allah’s mercy and the kafir will be in the fire – this is the reality of our situation. Allah says:

As for him whose balance is heavy, [with sincere right action]

he will have a most pleasant life.

But as for him whose balance is light,

his motherland is Hawiya.

And what will convey to you what that is?

A raging Fire!

It is important that we, the Muslims, those who believe in Allah and His Habib, His Beloved, sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, put our energy in the right direction; in doing those things that Allah is pleased with – those things that will lead to us to victory in the long run. Allah says in Surat al-Saff:

It is He who sent His Messenger with guidance and the Deen of Truth to exalt it over every other deen, though the idolaters hate it.

You who have iman! shall I direct you to a transaction which will save you from a painful punishment?

It is to have iman in Allah and His Messenger and strive in the Way of Allah with your wealth and yourselves.

That is better for you if you only knew.

He will forgive you your wrong actions and admit you into Gardens with rivers flowing under them, and fine dwellings in the Gardens of Eden. That is the Great Victory.

And other things you love: support from Allah and imminent victory. Give good news to the muminun!

Abu Saeed al-Khudri, may Allah be pleased with him, said, “I heard the Messenger of Allah saying: ‘Whichever of you sees something reprehensible, he should change it with his hand. If he is unable to do so, he should change it with his tongue. If he is unable to do that, he should change it with his heart, and that is the weakest of faith.’”

Although the hadith states that changing it with one’s heart is the weakest of faith, it should not be underestimated since the heart is more powerful than many realise. Just rejecting something in the heart can be effective. Moreover, the heart is the seat of all change since striving to change our situation for the better and implement the Deen of Allah with our hands and tongue comes from the action of the heart, our niyya – intention – to do so. And it is the intention to please Allah that gives life to our action and it is also that which gives it validity and leads to Allah’s reward. The Messenger, sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, said

“Actions are only given value by intentions. Each person will only have that which he intended. So whoever does Hijra to Allah and His Messenger, His Hijra is to Allah and His Messenger; and whoever does Hijra for the sake of the dunya or in order to marry a woman, then his Hijra is to that which he emigrated to.”

We ask Allah to purify our heart and put right our intentions, and to help us to reject all that He is displeased with and welcome all that leads to His pleasure.

Part 2

You who have iman! Have taqwa of Allah and iman in His Messenger. He will give you a double portion of His mercy and grant you a Light by which to walk and forgive you. Allah is Ever-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

It is important to understand that what is happening in Palestine is in fact a continuation of that which began with the brutal colonisation of the American continent at the hands of European settlers and the barbarities of the French Revolution. It is a pattern that has been repeated through modern history throughout Africa, Hind, and the Hijaz and in many other places. Thus, it is simply a continuation of the dark shadow that has been cast by ideologues, whose ideas are by definition at odds with the fitra – the natural form of human beings. Given that riba has fuelled their implementation, their proponents are at war with Allah and His Messenger as Allah has declared in the Qur’an:

You who have iman! have taqwa of Allah and forgo any remaining usury if you are muminun. If you do not, know that it means war from Allah and His Messenger. But if you make tawba you may have your capital, without wronging and without being wronged.

Allah is the Rabb al-Alamin, the manager, controller and cultivator of all that is created, and thus they are in fact at war with Existence itself. This does not mean that we Muslims must take up arms and physically go and fight. We are shamefully in a state of powerlessness and none of the Muslim world has been able to stand up to this behemoth of kufr. But it does mean that we must reject it with our heart, turn to Allah and seek His help to change our situation, and also work towards changing our own state:

Everyone has a succession of angels in front of him and behind him, guarding him by Allah’s command. Allah never changes a people’s state until they change what is in themselves. When Allah desires evil for a people, there is no averting it. They have no protector apart from Him.

In Surat al-Fatiha, Allah says, teaching us adab with Him,

(5) You alone we worship. You alone we ask for help.

Thus, Allah places our striving before us seeking His help – this is Adab with Allah. If we want to change our condition of helplessness, we must therefore turn to Him – not only through exaltation, praise and devotion to Him, but through obedience to his commands and prohibitions and through striving to purify ourselves.

And we must do what we can to establish the Deen in whatever capacity we have, in ourselves, our families and in society. This can be done through a number of means, including the establishment of locally collected and distributed zakat, da’wa (calling those around us to worship of the Divine), through our asabiya – our bond in Allah – and above all – khidma/service. There is a saying that Sayyid al-qawm khadimahum – ‘the master of a people is the one who serves them’. Being a believer is a great blessing but is also a great responsibility and we must become people who take responsibility for our situation and for the creation in general, since it is the believers who are khalifs on the earth.

It also entails us coming together as a community and holding onto the good company we have, since that leads to safety.

A vital part of turning to Allah in devotion is through sincerely asking Him, the Most Generous, the Powerful, since, as Rasool sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said:

Du’a – asking Allah – is the very essence of worship.

And this is a secret of the month of Ramadan, since Allah says in the middle of the verses that detail that fast of Ramadan and the significance of the month:

(186) If My slaves ask you about Me, I am near. I answer the call of the caller when he calls on Me. They should therefore respond to Me and believe in Me so that hopefully they will be rightly guided.

We are living in a time the requires a great deal of sabr – patience, equanimity and  steadfastness. Ramadan is a training ground for just that and our Messenger is reported to have called Ramadan “Shahru’s-Sabr” the moth of patience. And now we have left Ramadan behind us and we move into the coming months, it is important to take what we have gained from this blessed month with us and to nurture and feed it in order that such good qualities grow in us. And Allah says:

Allah is with the Patient

And the Messenger sallallahu alayhi wa salam said:

Be mindful of Allah and you will find Him in front of you. Recognise Allah in prosperity and He will acknowledge you in difficulty. Know that what passes you by could never afflict you and whatever afflicts you could never pass you by.

Know that victory is gained through patience, that relief comes with affliction and that difficulty comes with ease.

Along with sabr, we are also in need of a great amount of tawakkul – reliance, putting our trust in Allah. Allah says in Surat at-Talaq:

Whoever puts his trust in Allah – He will be enough for him.

Whoever relies on Allah and does not rely on other than Him or take on the management of their own affairs, Allah will suffice them and take care of their management. It is not that we do not act, but that we recognise that Allah is in control of it and trust in His judgement, and thus are not attached to the outcomes, believing that we are bringing them about. We are the slaves and He is the Lord.

I would like to finish by reiterating the aforementioned verse from Surat al-Saff:

You who have iman! shall I direct you to a transaction which will save you from a painful punishment?

It is to have iman in Allah and His Messenger and strive in the Way of Allah with your wealth and yourselves. That is better for you if you only knew.

He will forgive you your wrong actions and admit you into Gardens with rivers flowing under them, and fine dwellings in the Gardens of Eden. That is the Great Victory.

And other things you love: support from Allah and imminent victory. Give good news to the muminun!

So we ask that Allah gives us patience and aid us in sincerely turning to Him and make reliance on Him easy for us.

We ask Allah that Islam will spread in these lands and will become a source of great benefit for the inhabitants of the isles and will be a source of help for the worldwide Muslim Ummah.

We ask Allah to give us victory, both outwardly and inwardly.

We ask Allah for a good seal and for His mercy.
