 PART 1

Allah says in His Generous Book:

You who believe, have taqwa of Allah with the taqwa due to Him and do not die except as Muslims.

We thank Allah for having caused us to reach the blessed day of Eid al-Adha. We gather here on this rare occasion that the Muslim community is unified in celebrating Eid on the same day. Contrary to popular belief, the fact that the local Muslim community, and indeed the worldwide Muslim Umma, are so often unable to be unified is not the result of having different views about the Deen, or even tribal or national affiliation. On the contrary, it is a matter of record that the earliest Muslims, the Companions, may Allah be pleased with them, would often have differing views and many of the tribal structures that existed before the revelation was sent down remained in place even after the Muslims had been bonded together in brotherhood. What unified them was something much deeper than that; it was their Iman in and their deep love for Allah and for His Messenger ﷺ. It was this powerful dynamic that enabled them to transcend tribal affiliations, affiliations which had caused some of the tribes of the Hijaz to be at war for hundreds of years. These deep divisions were swept aside by Allah, through this Iman and this love for the Allah and His Messenger, . Allah says speaking to the Prophet :

If they intend to deceive you, Allah is enough for you. It is He who supported you with His help and with the muminun, and unified their hearts. Even if you had spent everything on the earth, you could not have unified their hearts. But Allah has unified them. He is Almighty, All-Wise.

O Prophet! Allah is enough for you, and for the muminun who follow you.

Here we see that Allah attributes the joining of the hearts to Himself. Even if you had spent everything on the earth, you could not have unified their hearts. But Allah has unified them. So Allah, who is capable of joining the hearts in this way, is enough for you, and for the muminun who follow you. So what we need is Allah, and not other-than-Him. And through this, the Companions became united in such a way that this relatively small band of men and women became an unstoppable force in the world. And we owe Allah and them a great deal of gratitude for it, because if it were not for them we would not be standing here today proclaiming Allah’s greatness.

Another vital aspect of this unity was that the Muslims historically took the issue of political leadership very seriously. Allah says:

You who have iman! obey Allah and obey the Messenger and those in command among you.

So we are told not only to obey Allah and His Messenger , but also those in command, i.e. those with political authority. Thus, Muslim political authority is absolutely needed. Amirat, political leadership, is vital to both the unity of the Muslims and to the emergence of an authentic iteration of the Deen of Allah. An amir functions to safeguard communal elements of the Deen, such as the collection and distribution of zakat, determining and announcing the beginning and end of Ramadan –and in fact all of the lunar months–, among other vital components related to both Ibadat and Mu’amalat. The Messenger of Allah  instructed that, even when travelling in a small group, someone should be appointed as Amir:

When three people go out on a journey, appoint one as an Amir.

Alhamdulillah, amirat is something we as a community have been implementing, and if we can hold ourselves to it while cultivating our Iman and our love for Allah and His Messenger , we will see great things happen by Allah’s permission. May Allah support our Amir, Amir Bashir, in establishing the Deen of Allah and give us the ability to follow his lead.

PART 2

Allah says in His Mighty Book:

You who have iman! have taqwa of Allah and speak words which hit the mark. He will put your actions right for you and forgive you your wrong deeds. All who obey Allah and His Messenger have won a mighty victory.

On this blessed day, it is useful to remind ourselves about some of the ways we celebrate Eid al-Adha. Firstly, we do so by attending the Eid prayer. Secondly, by making arrangements for a sacrifice if one has the means to do so – which should be a healthy sheep or goat (both of which should be at least a year old), or a cow (which should be at least three years old), or a camel (which should be at least five years old). We do this as soon as possible after the Eid prayer before the three days of Eid come to an end, and it is forbidden to sell or exchange the meat. You can use it to feed your family and friends, you can set some aside, and you can give some to the poor. It is good to do all of these.

I would caution against relying on charities to do this for us, as it takes the practice away from us and puts it into the hands of those whom, if we are honest, we do not really know whether or not they are doing it correctly. One should not deputise such things unless you know the conditions are being fulfilled. In fact, one only has to make the sacrifice if you are able to and not having the means to slaughter precludes the obligation to do it. Moreover, in the Deen it is always better to give to the local community before giving to those thousands of miles away. Perhaps what is needed is to move toward acquiring the means to implement these practices in the most authentic way possible.

The days of Eid are also an opportunity to visit family and friends and to remember and be thankful for the blessings Allah has given us.

Finally, during the three days of the Eid, we also recite takbirs after each of the next fifteen obligatory prayers, the last of which is the morning prayer on Monday. This can be done using the wording I have used throughout this khutba:

Allah bless and protect our community, and guide every single one of us to that which leads to your pleasure. Allah bless our teachers and elevate those who serve us to the highest ranks. Allah accept the Hajj of all those who were able to travel to it and make it a means for positive transformation of the Umma of Muhammad .
