Allah says in His Generous Book:

You who believe, have taqwa of Allah with the taqwa due to Him and do not die except as Muslims.

Alhamdulillah for the gift of Islam, which is the door to eternal bliss. Alhamdulillah that He sent us the Prophet Muhammad  the Final Messenger, who is the most blessed of all means. Without him, we would have remained in the darkness of ignorance and we would never have been guided. Alhamdulillah that Allah has chosen us to be among those to whom He gave a heart that has heard and answered the call of His Messengers.

As well as spending the month fasting in the daytimes, the worldwide Muslim community have spent the previous month immersed in the Qur’an, standing in the night reciting its verses, reflecting on its meanings and reconnecting with the guidance that Allah sent to us through His Beloved, the Messenger of Allah

Allah said:

Allah showed great kindness to the muminun when He sent a Messenger to them from among themselves to recite His Signs to them and purify them and teach them the Book and Wisdom, even though before that they were clearly misguided.

It is worth reflecting on this ayat, since it succinctly summarises some of the relevance that the Messenger of Allah  has to us, the Muslims. Firstly, he  transmitted the Qur’an, and Allah has made that transmission reach us, when before that we had not heard it, nor felt its impact on our hearts and we were certainly without sure guidance before it reached us. Now that Ramadan is over, it is worth us trying our best to maintain our connection with Allah’s Book: this could be a hizb a day or an ayat a day, depending on your capacity. Let’s commit ourselves to an amount that we can manage and remain constant with, through thick and thin. There is great baraka in doing this, and if we can add to that reading the translation or the tafsir, even better.

Secondly, he  showed us the way to purify ourselves from the dirt of wrong actions and character defects. Indeed, as he himself said  from Abu Huraira may Allah be please with him:

The messenger of Allah blessings and peace be upon him said:

“I was only sent to perfect noble qualities of character.”

He showed us those things that Allah loves and which He rewards, subhana, and warned us of those things that can lead us to Allah’s anger and punishment. Those things he warned against cause the light of the heart to fade, and this light can eventually die out, May Allah protect us. However, those things that lead to Allah’s pleasure illuminate the heart. Turning away from wrong action is a lifelong pursuit, and he  gave us the means to do just that. On top of this, just sending salawat to him ﷺ has a profound impact on the heart and is another great means to its purification.

Thirdly, he ﷺ taught us the Book and the Wisdom. The book is the Qur’an and the Wisdom is the Sunna of the Messenger . He was the practical application of the Qur’an. The book was revealed onto the heart of the Messenger  and was the fabric of his very being. He always acted according to it, and his life could be viewed as a tafsir of the Qur’an itself. This was witnessed by those around him, his noble Companions. It was transmitted to them, and they were transformed by it, and by Allah’s permission, that transmission – and therefore that transformation – remains accessible to this day. It was this transformation that drove the rapid spread of the Deen of Allah in that first century by those who had been exposed to that brilliant light. The ayat we are looking at ends by Allah saying that He sent the Messenger even though before that they were clearly misguided. So Allah, in His generosity, made it possible for a misguided people to receive the highest form of guidance in the Book of Allah and the Sunna of the noble Messenger .

He  was truly sent as a Mercy to all the Worlds and it is inevitable that any who truly grasp this will be thankful for that fact. Alhamdulillahi wash-shukru lillah.

Part 2

O you who have iman! Have taqwa of Allah and let each self look to what it has sent forward for tomorrow. Have taqwa of Allah.

Allah is aware of what you do.

Islam is a Deen of action. The Muslims should not be passive. Sometimes, the correct course of action is stillness and not jumping into action, when doing so could make a situation worse. Yet, even then, the Muslim remains active in this stillness. Of course, the practices of the Deen are spread out throughout the days, weeks, months and years; yet what we call worship – despite its importance and centrality to our lives – is only a small part of the Deen of Allah. They are the supports that keep the building of Islam upright. But the building itself remains another matter that has been neglected since the Osmanli Dawlat was dismantled in the wake of World War 1 and one of the pillars, zakat, has fallen into disrepair.

It vital to understand that is not necessary for us to be perfect. Making mistakes is a part of the human experience. Abu Huraira, may Allah be pleased with him said:

The Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, said: “By the One in Whose Hands my soul is, if you were to not do wrong actions, Allah would do away with you and bring forth a people who do wrong actions and as a result seek Allah’s forgiveness and He will forgive them.”

We must therefore act in the world and remain constant in seeking forgiveness of Allah. This creates a dynamic whereby we can begin to truly know ourselves, not in terms of the historic narrative we may identify with, but as humans that are capable of continual change, and it is by that inner refinement that our domestic and social situations will begin to change too. Allah says:

Everyone has a succession of angels in front of him and behind him, guarding him by Allah’s command. Allah never changes a people’s state until they change what is in themselves. When Allah desires evil for a people, there is no averting it. They have no protector apart from Him.

While these ayats make it clear that the Muslims got into our present position of weakness through our communal shortcomings, it also indicates that there is a path back to strength. This path entails changing what is in ourselves. And this strength will, by Allah’s permission, bring much needed justice and balance to the world.

These ayats also indicate that the matter is not simply materialistic. It is not about numbers, wealth or power over the mechanism of the state. We are at every moment surrounded by angelic activity and Divine protection. It is the knowledges that come with awareness of these unseen aspects of our existence that give the Muminun the edge. And for the people with certainty about these realities, we have been given a book of guidance that came from the Rabb al-Alamin and that revelation was revealed onto the pristine heart of the Best of all Creation, Muhammad ibn Abdillah .  Allah says:

Alif Lam Mim

That is the Book, without any doubt. It contains guidance for those who have taqwa:

those who have iman in the Unseen and establish salat and spend from what We have provided for them;

those who have iman in what has been sent down to you and what was sent down before you, and are certain about the Next World.

They are the people guided by their Lord. They are the ones who have success.

If we can learn anything from this past month of fasting, it is that we can change. We can turn away from our habits and patterns of behaviour, we can get up before dawn, and we can spend time with the Book of Allah. And if we can oppose our lower desires, then we can have success. This is at the core of the message our Prophet .

We ask Allah for success. We ask Allah to help us to continually change for the better. We ask Allah for an opening for the Muslims community and for relief from the difficulties we face. And we ask Allah to accept our fasts so that we will be of those who have been freed from the fire.
