Allah says in His Generous Book:

You who believe, have taqwa of Allah with the taqwa due to Him and do not die except as Muslims.

There is no doubt the month of Ramadan is a great gift to us from Allah, and all the acts of worship we take on during it, fasting, increased recitation of Qur’an and standing during the night in prayer, have a profound effect on us that can take us through the year, and indeed throughout our lives. We ask Allah to accept our fasts, our standing in prayer and all those things we did in the hope of Allah’s pleasure and acceptance. And we ask Allah to pardon our faults and forgive us our shortcomings.

Allah says:

Allah showed great kindness to the muminun when He sent a Messenger to them from among themselves to recite His Signs to them and purify them and teach them the Book and Wisdom, even though before that they were clearly misguided.

Once again, this Ramadan has come upon us while the Muslims are under attack. As part of this, there are malicious actors here in our own land who are trying to stir up anti-Muslim sentiment. But this should not be seen as some sort of insurmountable problem but rather as part of the enduring struggle between belief and disbelief. Wherever there is a party standing for the truth and calling to tawhid, there is always a party who stand in opposition to them. A Hizbullah and a Hizb ush-Shaytan. It could be said that the existence of the latter – Shaytan’s party – is a proof of the truth of the party of Allah. Allah says:

Your friend is only Allah and His Messenger and those who have iman: those who establish salat and pay zakat, and bow.

As for those who make Allah their friend, and His Messenger and those who have iman: it is the party of Allah who are victorious.

According to al-Baghawi, the Hizb Allah are the helpers of Allah’s Deen, or you could say, those who give victory to Allah’s deen. One must not conflate this with organisations who claim this title for themselves. Those who strive to establish the deen of Allah in their selves and their families and their communities are the party of Allah that are victorious. By use of the word “party”, Allah makes clear the communal, collaborative nature of the His deen. It is not the individuals of Allah, but the party of Allah.

The Messenger of Allah is reported to have said:

The believers are like a building, each part supporting the other.

In order for this victory to happen, there has to be a coming together; to become like a bunyanan marSuS – a tightly compacted building, with each part supporting the other. This indicates that there must be personal responsibility for everyone in the community. The roof is not able to shelter without other supporting structures, like the walls and the pillars, and the foundations have no meaning without the rest of the building. Each person in a community is vital to the others, playing a role only he or she can play, being unable to sufficiently play a role other than that for which he or she was made. And Allah is the gatherer; thus, by His rububiya the various qualities that are needed in order for the community to have success are brought together in the most perfect way. We are the gathering we are because Allah decreed it to be so in His timeless wisdom and knowledge.

Part 2

You who have iman! have taqwa of Allah and be with the truly sincere [those who are truthful through and through].

So we have seen that this Deen is communal in nature, and that while working towards shared goals, everyone has their role to play. The Deen is outwardly action, inwardly recognition.

Allah says, indicating the nature of the believers:

Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, and those who are with him are fierce to the kafirun, merciful to one another. You see them bowing and prostrating, seeking Allah’s good favour and His pleasure. Their mark is on their faces, the traces of prostration.

Although this ayat refers specifically to the Companions of the Messenger of Allah, Allah be pleased with them all, they are the generation to be emulated. While we will not reach their rank, being resolute and unfaltering in the face of the kafirun while also being merciful to believers is a mark of the rightly guided. This is a fruit of the practices of the Deen, when done with sincerity.

An-Nu’man bin Bashir said:

The Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, said: “You see the muminun in their mutual mercy, affection and empathy for one another to be just like a body; if one part of the body complains, the whole body responds with sleeplessness and fever.”

For anyone who has a living heart that is illuminated by iman, this hadith resonates in a very clear way. When one’s brothers and sisters are suffering distress and grief, we all feel that with them. This is the very meaning of compassion – suffering together – and it is a hallmark of the believers. It is a great gift and we owe Allah much gratitude for it. It is in part by this mutual love that the Muslims went from a small band of men and women in Makka to being a force for good on the world stage. It is this love, affection, and compassion, which is a fruit of tawhid, that imbues our lives with a sweetness that heralds the good things to come in the garden.  This is our inheritance and, if we act by it, it will be our future and the future of these isles.  And success is by Allah.

We ask Allah to remove the suffering of our brothers and sisters across the world and particularly those within our community and to make our compassion manifest as positive action and a force for change in the world. We Ask Allah to keep us on the straight path and to accept our efforts to please him. And we ask that by that He will look to us with a glance that will take us out of the darkness and into the light.

Before I close, I would like to invite all here to the breakfast gathering that will happen straight after the khutba in the hall. All are welcome.
