You who have iman! have taqwa of Allah with the taqwa due to Him and do not die except as Muslims.

Alhamdulillah wash-shukrulillah for allowing us to live to see another Eid, and we have no guarantee that any of us here will see another.

Alhamdulillah for the blessing of Islam and is a sufficient blessing for it is the key we have been given to open the way for us fulfilling our purpose. Allah says:

“We only created Jinn and Mankind to worship Me.”

And Allah said:

Blessed be He who has the Kingdom in His Hand! He has power over all things. He who created death and life to test which of you is best in action. He is the Almighty, the Ever-Forgiving.

Allah informs us that life and death were created to test us to see ayyukumu ahsanu ‘amala – which of us is best in action; whose actions are qualitatively better and most have the quality of ihsan.

An-Nasafi said that there are two main aspects to being best in action. The first is sincerity; that what we do is done solely for Allah’s sake and not for the sake of something else, whether that be the acceptance of people, the desire for leadership or anything other than Allah that we may find in our hearts. The second is an action’s correctness, which is determined by whether or not it is in accordance with the sunna of the Messenger of Allah,

It was he who said:

"إنَّ اللَّهَ كَتَبَ الْإِحْسَانَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ، فَإِذَا قَتَلْتُمْ فَأَحْسِنُوا الْقِتْلَةَ، وَإِذَا ذَبَحْتُمْ فَأَحْسِنُوا الذِّبْحَةَ، وَلْيُحِدَّ أَحَدُكُمْ شَفْرَتَهُ، وَلْيُرِحْ ذَبِيحَتَهُ".

“Allah has enjoined Ihsan on everything, so whoever kills, should kill with ihsan, and whoever slaughters, should slaughter with ihsan. Let each one of you sharpen his blade and put his animal at ease.”

This is not only a command to perform the act of sacrificing an animal well, but to execute all one’s obligations and ordinary actions in the most excellent way possible because he, , said “Allah has enjoined Ihsan on everything.

At this time of the Eid of the sacrifice, it is useful to reflect on the Muslim method of slaughtering since it is one of the avenues that the Zionist backed far right have used to attack the Muslims, accusing us of animal cruelty simply because we cut the throat of the animals without stunning them first. However, our method of slaughter has been found to be painless for the animals – contrary to so-called civilised methods. In a 1978 study by Schulze, researchers tested pain responses in slaughtered animals using EEG and ECG to test brain and heart responses. One group of animals were slaughtered by cutting the throat, severing the jugular vein and carotid artery, as per the sunna, while the other group were slaughtered after stunning the animals with a captive bolt pistol to stun the animal prior to the slaughter. Interestingly, they did not find any pain responses for those animals that had been slaughtered without stunning, concluding that the animals died too swiftly to register any pain. However, stunning the animal was found to cause the animal severe pain leading to an agonising death.

Now, we do not need a scientific study to legitimise the teaching we have received from the Messenger of Allah, , but it can be useful to know when confronted by the ignorant. And those who have excused a genocide are hardly concerned about the welfare of a few sheep. It is of course a political game.

This leads us to another context in which we are commanded to do something that is “ahsan” in Qur’an. Allah says:

Who could say anything better [ahsan] than someone who calls to Allah and acts rightly and says, ‘I am one of the Muslims’? A good action and a bad action are not the same. Repel the bad with something better [ahsan] and, if there is enmity between you and someone else, he will be like a bosom friend. None will obtain it but those who are truly steadfast. None will obtain it but those who have great good fortune.

Ibn Abbas said regarding this “repel the bad with what is better”, that Allah “…ordered patience in the face of anger, hilm/forbearance in the face of ignorance, and forgiveness when wronged.” It is not that we should be easily walked all over, but that we should act with clean hearts and awareness of Allah’s presence in the face of enmity and act according to the wisdom of the moment, as best we can.

PART 2

You who have iman! have taqwa of Allah and be with the truly sincere.

Eid al-Adhaa, the Eid of Sacrifice, is the day that Sayyiduna Ibrahim, Khalil-ullah, the Close Friend of Allah, was ordered by his Lord in a dream to sacrifice his son. His son said, “Do what you have been ordered, you will find me among the patient”. But when the time came, and his son was laid down on his side for the slaughter, Allah said to Ibrahim: “You have been true to the dream” and he was ordered to sacrifice a large ram in place of his son.

We celebrate this great event in a number of ways. Firstly, by attending the Eid prayer. Secondly, by making arrangements for a sacrifice if one has the means to do so – which should be a healthy sheep or goat (both of which should be at least a year old), or a cow (which should be at least three years old), or a camel (which should be at least five years old). We do this as soon as possible after the Eid prayer and it is forbidden to sell or exchange the meat. You can use it to feed your family and friends, you can set some aside, and you can give some to the poor. It is good to do all of these. The days of Eid are a time to visit family and friends and to remember and be thankful for the blessings Allah has given us. During the three days of this Eid, we also recite takbirs after each of the next fifteen obligatory prayers, the last of which is subh on Saturday.

Making sacrifices is essential if we wish to deepen our connection with the Divine and if we want to put right our situation. Allah says:

The meaning of which is:

Allah has bought from the muminun their selves and their wealth in return for the Garden.

At the end of this passage Allah declares:

وَذَٰلِكَ هُوَ الْفَوْزُ الْعَظِيمُ

That is the great victory.

Sacrifice opens the way to “the great victory” and we can be sure that, in making sacrifices in Allah’s way and collectively dedicating ourselves to Him, we can only gain from it. It must be remembered the sacrifice made by the Messenger  and his Companions ؓ. They faced persecution, they emigrated to escape the tyranny of their situation, leaving behind all they knew, they fought and they suffered many casualties and losses. Without this, we would never have known of the Deen of Islam and guidance would have never reached us. This responsibility has now reached us today; to ensure that the Deen of Allah can survive and thrive for many generations to come.

Allah says:

What is with you runs out but what is with Allah goes on for ever.

Those who were steadfast will be recompensed according to the best [ahsan] of what they did.

Allah help us to act in the best possible way in whatever situations we find ourselves in. Allah give us success in calling to Him. Allah help us to see through the deceptions we face and give us the ability to discern that which will protect us from His anger and that which will lead to His pleasure. We ask Allah for mercy for us and the whole umma, and we ask for victory – particularly in places in which the Muslims are being persecuted. We ask Allah to purify our hearts and we ask Allah for the establishment of the Deen in our time.
